Despite most drivers agreeing that red light running is very or extremely dangerous, 25 percent admit to having run a red light in the past 30 days. This disconnect between beliefs and behavior has significant consequences. Crashes involving red light running kill more than 1,000 people and injure an additional 127,000 each year in the United States. In addition to the injuries and lost lives, red light running-related collisions can have a substantial financial impact, leaving victims and their families grappling with medical bills and other unexpected expenses.

When a reckless driver ran a red light and sped through a busy four-way intersection in Omaha, colliding with our client and causing severe injuries, the Law Office of Matthew A. Lathrop fought to secure a fair and fast resolution. Please keep reading to learn what Matt and his team were able to accomplish for this client.

The Accident

Our 52-year-old client, Gary, was driving in a busy residential neighborhood in Omaha when he came to a four-way intersection. As he turned left on the green light, heading north, the driver to his right ran the red light, plowing through the intersection at 30 to 40 mph and hitting our client. The impact force rolled the other driver’s vehicle onto its side and spun Gary’s car 270 degrees, sending it careening into a parked car in someone’s driveway.

The Injuries

Gary lost consciousness during the accident and woke up in a stranger’s front yard with no memory of the crash or how it happened. He never saw the driver—or the impact—coming. Dazed, Gary remained in his vehicle until the police arrived to help him. They transported him to the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with C7 and C8 cervical spine fractures, a broken tooth, facial fractures, rib and knee pain, and a concussion.

As a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash, Gary spent several weeks in a neck brace with a neurosurgeon following his care. Though his injuries somewhat improved with treatment, he still experiences many of the adverse effects from the accident.

The Investigation

We launched a thorough investigation into the crash and began exploring every potential avenue for compensation. With limited insurance coverage available, we moved quickly, making a policy limit demand against the at-fault driver’s auto insurance.

The Resolution

Extensive insurance coverage wasn’t available in this case. However, we were committed to helping our client recover. We fought to resolve his legal matter as swiftly and efficiently as possible to ensure that the other driver’s private insurance paid all his medical bills, allowing our client to avoid subrogation.
